Perennials are plants that live more than two years.  Examples of some familiar perennials are Black eyed Susan, purple coneflower, hosta, daylillies and irises.  There are many more varieties.  Perennials are a great asset to the garden.  They provide an almost permanent element to the landscape and some gardeners strive to have beds made entirely of perennials for low maintenance.

     Perennial gardens are not completely maintenance free, however.  Once a bed is established, the plants will spread and after a few years will need to be divided.  Plant division is important for several reasons.  The size of the plant can be controlled by division, a plant is healthier if it has room to grow and new plants are provided for your own garden or to share.  If you have a perennial bed in need of some TLD (tender, loving division) come to the Second Saturday at the Halifax Farmer's Market on August 10 at 9:30 a.m. for a special demonstrationon how to conquer your fear of plant division.  The Southside Master Gardeners will be at the market from 8 to 11 a.m. to provide information on how to establish a perennial garden or how to add perennials to your present landscape and of course to answer all your gardening questions.
