Help Protect/Improve Water Quality in the Banister River & Winn Creek

Help Protect and Improve Water Quality in the Banister River & Winn Creek

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is working with Banister River and Winn Creek watershed stakeholders to develop a water cleanup plan.  The Banister River and Winn Creek do not meet Virginia's recreational water quality standard because of E.coli bacteria.  Help us determine what actions and resources are needed to meet water quality goals by participating in the Residential & Agriculural Working Group.  The Residential & Agricultural Working Group Meeting will take place on August 13, 2014 from 6:00pm - 8:00 pm at the Mary Bethune Administration Building Board Room at 1030 Cowford Road in Halifax, VA  24558.

Potential strategies include:  Reduce pasture runoff & livestock stream access, repair or replace failing septic systems, minimize pet waste pollution.

Wild Blue River Festival - September 13th

A day long celebration of the Southern Virginia Wild Blueway and outdoor recreation!

The Town of Halifax will be hosting it's final event of the 2014 season.  On Saturday, September 13th, we will be celebrating the Wild Blue River Festival.

The event will kick off at 8 am with an Adventure Race sponsored by 524 Fitness.  At 10 am we will have an official preview of the kayak/canoe launch currently under construction at the Banister River Bridge (Rt 360).  At 11 am Main Street, from the Courthouse to the Farmers Market, will host vendors, food, beer, kids activities, wildlife presentations, and even a 26 foot rock climbing wall.  River Traders will have canoes and kayaks available at the Banister Lake for anyone who wants to paddle around.  In the evening, the festival will transition over to the Farmers Market where live music will take center stage.

Many activities are being planned for this festival which we hope will become a major event for the Town, the County and the SoVA region.  With the recent launch of the Southern Virginia Wild Blueway, and the construcction of the Banister River Gateway (canoe launch), Halifax is poised to see growth in tourism to our town centered around outdoor recreation.  A festival focused on outdoor tourism and recreation creates a unique event for our region, and will bring in people interested in boating and fishing, as well as those just looking to have a good time in our town and onto our waterways.

To host an event like this, we need your help.  Not only are sponsors needed to allow us to bring in exciting and uniwque activities, but also to hlep us to spread the word and market the event.  A sponsorship application highlighting the activities we are trying to have as well as the various sponsorship levels is available.  If you have any questions about becoming a sponsor, please call Rebecca Ramey at 434-476-2337 or email at halifaxVAevents.com.
