Hiring of New Chief of Police-Town of Halifax

Job Description/Responsibilities:  Founded in 1777 as the Seat of Halifax County (Pop. 36,241), the historic Town of Halifax (pop. 1,308), is situated in the Southern Piedmont of Virginia on US Hwy 501 approximately 55 miles south of Lynchburg, VA and 59 miles north of Durham, NC, contiguous to the Town of South Boston, VA (Pop. 8,142).  Chief serves under the general administration and authority of the Town Manager and the overall charge of the Mayor under Mayor-Council form of government.  Responsible for day-to-day operation and administration of the Police Department (FY 2011-12 Budget = $249,052), with additional 3 full-time sworn police officers and compliment of certified part-time officers.  Directly supervises all aspects of the department, including the training and deployment of police officers to best serve the town's public safety needs.  Chief answers calls for service in patrol capacity and performs all duties with highest standard of professional conduct in concert with town council's objectives and in response to the community's general welfare.

Qualifications:  Looking for candidates having exceptional small town customer service skills.  BS/BA in criminal justice, police administration preferred, or related field and applicable experience with GED/High School Diploma; grant writing ability desirable; Current Virginia DCJS certification required; at least 3 years of senior administrative experience with at least 7 years of uniformed police experience are also required; demonstrate proven track record of professional development, supervisory ability and proactive community police practices.

Salary:  (DOQ/DOE) Starting salary up to $42,000 with qualifications & experience and within 2011-2012 FY Budget (+) benefits package including health insurance, life insurance and access to Virginia Retirement System (VRS)
